Open/Close Instrument Plug-In Window of Focused Track

While everyone is elated about the new addition in SMART TEMPO in Logic X, I am secretly celebrating another hidden feature in 10.4. It is called “Open/Close Instrument Plug-In Window of Focused Track”. Logic users have been asking for this particular feature for years and now it is here. Let me show and tell you what this does.

This magnificent feature gives us the option to recall not only the software instrument that we are currently using BUT it also allows us to summon the audio (and midi fx) inserts as well. Why am I so excited about this? If there is anything that can help me use the mouse/trackpad LESS then count me in.

By default, it has no key command. Time is of the essence…so let’s set that up now. Go to Logic>Key Commands>Edits.

This will open up the key command window. In the search bar type in “Open/Close” and you will see a long list of unassigned key commands. Let’s go over them.

Open/Close Instrument Plug-In Window of Focused Track

  • You can now open up and close the Instrument of the focused track (which means it has to be selected/ highlighted) with a Key Command.
  • This only applies to a Software Instrument track (not Audio or Drummer track).

Open/Close Audio Insert 1 Plug-In Window of Focused Track

  • This applies to the Audio Inserts themselves.
  • You can load up to 15 different inserts in Logic’s Audio Inserts.

Open/Close Midi Insert Insert 1 Plug-In Window of Focused Track

  • This applies to the Midi FX Inserts themselves.
  • You can load up to 15 different inserts in Logic’s Midi FX Inserts.

Here is how I set up my custom key commands.

Do not get me wrong, I am thrilled about SMART TEMPO and stoked to see Logic level the playing field with it. I have been using it like a madman but sometimes, in life, it is about the LITTLE things. This small change in the behavior of Logic will alter our workflows forever. I am so excited to witness and be a part of this Digital/Audio revolution. Cheers!!!
